What happened at Lambeth?

If you want to know what happened in Canterbury during the Lambeth Conference, you can:

Petition to Win Marriage Back

EQCA is already crunching numbers and doing extensive research to determine what election and what ballot language would give us the best chance to win marriage back.

We need to have a grassroots army ready to hit the streets if we are unsuccessful in court.

Thank you to all who have already signed up to carry petitions to qualify a new initiative to win marriage back. If you haven’t already, sign the petition now at www.eqca.org/petition. And please forward this call to action on to everyone you know.

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. And it was clearly not our "Father’s" Lambeth Conference.

That opening sentence from Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities reflected some of my experience at The 2008 Lambeth Conference.

It was the worst of times because of the divide, made visible by a plethora of different colored lanyards, between those on the inside (bishops, their spouses and the staff) and those who were on the outside (everyone else). For some, this color coded way of life seemed oddly reminiscent of life under Apartheid in South Africa.

It was the best of times because of unexpected moments of grace arising in the most peculiar places – places like the balcony of a college gym that served as the “marketplace” where companies and causes set up booths and banners to peddle their wares, services and ideas.

Lambeth 2008 was, if judged in the terms of goals set by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, a success. It was a very different from the last Lambeth Conference in 1998. That session was conceived of as a legislative meeting, a conference where a majority could, through passage of Lambeth Resolution 1.10, “put a nail in the coffin” of LGBT inclusion in the Anglican Church. Since Lambeth 1.10, Bishop Gene Robinson became the bishop of New Hampshire and the practice of blessing same gender couples has spread to many dioceses. A great deal of heat, and not very much light, has emerged from the Anglican Communion in the past decade.

Archbishop Williams planned Lambeth 2008 as a different kind of conference, one without legislation, one focused on building community through small “Indaba” group sessions, studying the Bible and learning about issues which have been swept aside. To achieve this, conference planners designed a session that began with a retreat during which the Archbishop of Canterbury began to emerge as a leader among the bishops. During the next two weeks, a bishop began their day by worshiping with their colleagues and then met in small ‘indaba’ groups, picking up an African word for meetings where significant questions are worked through in a community. The bishops continued with small group bible study, workshops on issues, and evening prayer. After dinner, the bishops might hear a talk or attend a ‘fringe event’ sponsored by a group like Integrity or Virginia Theological Seminary or an ex-gay ministry.

Rather than vote on a series of concluding resolutions, the bishops produced a “reflection paper.” If it reads like notes from an annual vestry retreat it is because the indaba process closely tracked what happens in any community that works to reconcile conflicting views into a common vision.

Through this process, Canadian and American bishops were able to explain the biblical basis for their efforts to include LGBT people in their church. Bishops from other countries were able to express the difficulties they experienced as a result of inclusion of LGBT people in Canada and America. Few bishops changed their opinion on any issue, but the fact that bishops with opposing views talked without rancorous emotional outbursts was a sea change from 1998.

Perhaps more important, the bishops explored their differing approaches to studying the bible. For the first time, some heard of alternative readings of texts that have been long used to condemn gay people. And that is a step towards greater understanding. In the “official” press conference pictured at right, Dr Maria Akrof, wife of the Archbishop of West Africa explained that while churches in some parts of the world have been dealing with the issue of homosexuality for a long time, this is a new issue for many Africans, and they need time before they will be as far along on this journey as others.

I think I understand where the Archbishop of Canterbury is coming from in all this. While he personally supports Inclusion of LGBT people in the church, he feels compelled to try and preserve the Anglican Communion. He takes Lambeth 1.10 as the starting point not because a Lambeth Resolution has the force of cannon law but because it accurately reflects where the communion was in 1998.

In his “Concluding Presidential Address to the Lambeth Conference 2008,” Archbishop Williams said:

“A fellow-Christian may believe they have a profound fresh insight. They seek to persuade others about it. A healthy church gives space for such exchanges. But the Christian with the new insight can’t claim straight away that this is now what the Church of God believes or intends; and it quite rightly takes a long time before any novelty can begin to find a way into the public liturgy, even if it has been widely agreed. Confusion arises when what is claimed as a new discernment presents itself as carrying the Church’s authority.”

On the one hand, this text explains the Archbishop’s call for a moratorium on establishment of rites for blessing same sex couples, because approving a rite creates “confusion” by presenting “itself as carrying the Church’s authority.”

On the other hand, the Archbishop approves of clergy providing the “pastoral care” needed by same gender couples, even if that entails blessing the couples in church. Providing pastoral care, apparently, does not carry the Church’s authority.”

On the one hand, the Archbishop calls for a moratorium on election of gay or lesbian bishops.

On the one hand, the Archbishop seems to not have a problem with a gay or lesbian bishop who is in the closet or who is celibate. The difficulty presented by New Hampshire Bishop Gene Robinson, it seems is that he is not living with his partner Mark in a celibate relationship.,

Justice for the poor but not LGBT people?

Interestingly, Archbishop Williams was uncharacteristically clear in dismissing the call for Bishop Robinson’s resignation raised by some conservative bloggers “covering” the conference.

We are left, then, standing in that “long time before any novelty can begin to find a way into the public liturgy.” The wheels of the Anglican Communion are turning slowly, and perhaps inevitably, towards inclusion of all God’s children in the church. We have a responsibility to those in dioceses where homosexuality is demonized, a responsibility that calls us to remain in the Anglican Communion and keep those wheels turning.

Some other important insights merged from Lambeth 2008 as the assembled bishops made clear they:

·    regard the Archbishop of Canterbury as their leader;

·    want to remain in Communion;

·    will pursue a Covenant; and

·    Reject any enforcement mechanism to punish churches who do not abide by the Covenant.

So where do we go from here? Some predications:

·     Work on a covenant will continue – for several years.

·     The Archbishop of Canterbury, who has long supported an enforcement mechanism for this covenant, will try to create an alternative mechanism. He will fail.

·     Those bishops who have been cherry-picking wealthy American parishes to add to their diocese will continue. Around the world, more and more Anglican bishops will see their actions as a potential threat.

·     Some bishops will increase their support of the Millennium Development Goals. The conservatives who are so concerned with gays and lesbians will not. Eventually, people will notice.

·     Several American bishops will try to lead their people out of the US Episcopal Church. They will be deposed and the courts will eventually return the dioceses to the National church. Millions of dollars that could have been spent on reaching Millennium Development Goals will be paid to lawyers and public relations firms.

·     Some priests and bishops will try to lead their people to the Roman Catholic Church. Roman Catholic leaders will not welcome them with open arms because they remember how much trouble the last bunch of priests and bishops were after they converted in the wake of the ordination of women.

Bishop Marc and fellow bishops escort New Hampshire Bishop Gene Robinson to the Changing Attitudes/Integrity Eucharist

Taking the group picture of all the bishops is one of the “big things” at each Lambeth. It takes a long time to herd hundreds of bishops onto a set of grandstands for the photograph. As the laborious process neared completion, some of the male bishops started singing Amazing Grace. First they sang in unison and then they broke into harmony, sounding like a well-rehearsed men’s chorus. A few measures later, the voices of our women bishops rose above the old harmony, reminding us of how much better we sound with both men and women as equals – and also of how few women are bishops across the Anglican Communion. After the group photo, the women bishops assembled for their own group picture.

The Women Bishops at Lambeth With the Archbishop and Bishop Coadjutor of Korea

Then another amazing thing happened: the archbishop and bishop coadjutor of Korea walked up and asked to have their pictures taken with the assembled women bishops. “You weren’t here last time,” one of them explained with a smile.

Such is the stuff of Lambeth: moments of surprising grace surrounded by something approaching an old boys club.

And now for a bit of personal reflection. During Lambeth 2008, I worked as a reporter for the Diocese of California and as an organizer for Oasis California. As a member of the press, I heard the Archbishop and other leaders of the Communion speak first hand. I walked with the Bishops and their spouses through the streets of London to support the Millennium Development Goals.

I also spent an evening on a candlelight tour of Canterbury Cathedral, a tour that began at the great western doors with a discussion of how important it is for everyone to know that these doors will open for them, that they are welcome in this church. Holding our candles, we walked past where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170. As we walked in back of the high altar, we saw where his shrine stood until it was torn down on the orders of King Henry VIII. But the king could not remove the impression left by thousands of pilgrims as they crawled on their knees past the Becket’s shrine.

Sometimes, the most moving revelations come from the piety of pilgrims not the edicts of the powerful.

As an organizer for Oasis California, I coordinated Witness at Lambeth, a program that brought a small group of LGBT people to Canterbury. Some of us came from the east coast, some from the west, and a few from far outside the US. We came to see what Lambeth was like, to meet with those who would meet with us as individuals, and to share our experiences. We came as pilgrims

Bible Study @ Lambeth through Alongside Lambeth

Much of our time centered on “Alongside Lambeth,” a quasi-official program for people who were on pilgrimage to Canterbury during Lambeth.

Each day we began with morning prayers and bible study, each afternoon we met to hear a speaker and say evening prayer, each night we attended fringe events or worked together on the daily newsletter published by a small band of volunteers.

Some of the Witness @ Lambeth Pilgrims. Check out our blogs.
We met for morning prayers and bible study in the balcony of that college gym I mentioned earlier. Sometimes there weren’t enough chairs, other times we’d have to shout to be heard over the din of people doing business down below. We were from Africa, North America and Europe. We ranged from the dean of the cathedral in South Africa to a curate from a small English town to Canadians who lived in their nation’s capitol.

We were a diverse group, and from that diversity emerged a richness in dialogue that exceeded my best expectations. Those sessions were transformative, day after day new ideas and insights flowed through those sessions offering new perspectives on the Gospel of John. And there I saw the real diversity of God’s people, not a diversity based on skin color or gender or sexual orientation, but a diversity of opinion and perspective and in approaching problems that was not skin deep but came from deep within.

St. Stephen’s Church opened its doors and its people opened their hearts, opening its parish house to serve as the working center of LGBT groups in its parish house and their sanctuary for Alongside Lambeth talks followed by evening prayer each day.

During Lambeth, I felt blessed to be part of a diversity of community that went deeper than the differing color of our skin, nationality or any of the superficial criteria we use to set ourselves off from others. My time in Canterbury was also spent getting to know some of my fellow pilgrims, like the Rev. Vicki Gray, who brought new perspectives and understandings to our group and those bishops who had ears to hear.

Watching our Bishop Marc Andrus advocate for LGBT people deepened my appreciation for his vision, leadership and courage. Starting with the planning process, Bishop Marc worked tirelessly to help bishops meet the “Listening Process” goals set by previous Lambeth Conferences. Without his efforts, and the struggle of like-minded bishops from around the world, far different results might have come from this conference.

Logos of some of the LGBT groups working together @ Lambeth

Our cause was supported by an amazingly diverse coalition of groups and individual who gave of their time and talent. Groups like Integrity and Oasis partnered with UK groups like Changing Attitudes and Inclusive Church. Together, we published newsletters, talked with bishops and worked to bring LGBT people from Africa.

Lambeth began for me on a Sunday evening when, the Rev. Dr. Giles Fraser (left greeting parishoners), Vicar of St. Mary's, Putney High Street, invited Bishop Gene Robinson to preach in that parish.   We continued on the Southbank of London as Bishop Gene and Sir Ian McKellen hosted the London premiere of the film For The Bible Tells Me So. Then we moved on to Canterbury for two weeks of hard work.

Some people say the Anglican Communion isn’t worth fighting to preserve. My experience in that upper room says different. No other church could offer that diversity of insight and perspective. Many churches span the globe but are not open to diversity of opinion. As Archbishop Williams said: a “healthy church gives space for such exchanges.” We are a very healthy church, and that bodes well for us and for all of God’s creation.
