A Commendation from the Board of Supervisors

Acknowledging the extraordinary contributions made by Oasis/California to the well-being, dignity, and spiritual life of San Francisco's lesbian and gay community:

Whereas, The Episcopal Diocese of California established Oasis/California to minister to and reach out to the lesbian and gay community; and

Whereas, Oasis/California has for four years celebrated God's presence in lesbian and gay life and advocates for the justice and dignity of lesbian and gay people; and

Whereas, Bishop of the Diocese, William Swing, Dean Alan Jones, and Grace Cathedral continue to provide outstanding leadership and a safe haven for Oasis and its work on behalf of all of God's children; and

Whereas, Bishop Otis Charles, the Reverend Terri Grotzinger, Christian de la Huerta, Father Robert Nugent, Sister Jeannine Gramick, and all those united this day in celebration and remembrance represent the best of the spirit of service to their fellow human beings; and

Whereas, Bishop Charles, the Reverend Grotzinger, Mr. de la Huerta, Father Nugent, Sister Gramick, and all Oasis members have demonstrated the courage and conviction to stand for the rights and dignity of all lesbian and gay people in the face of great controversy; and

Whereas, On this day of prayer and thanksgiving, we remember all those who have gone before us in the fight for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, especially all our fallen comrades in the war against AIDS and the recently martyred Matthew Shepard; therefore

Resolved, That the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco hereby declare Saturday, 29 January 2000, to be Oasis/California Day in San Francisco.
